Do i have to buy new tabs?

No! your new license plate comes with tabs at no extra charge. The tab expiration date will be identical to your current ones.

Do I have to personalize the plate?

No! Standard is the easiest option. DOL assigns the plate number.

What if I don't want a special number?

Choose Standard. You don't need to select anything else for the plate number.

What if I want my own letters/numbers?

Choose Personalized and provide your preferred choice. You will need to confirm that your choice is available and allowed at: https://fortress.wa.gov/dol/extdriveses/esp/NoLogon/_/#2

Why should i get a state sport license plate?

This is more than a license plate. Your support helps Washington's pickleball community advocate for dedicated public pickleball courts.

How much does it cost?

As of September 2026, the cost for a standard specialty plate for a passenger vehicle is $162, $214 for a personalized plate . However other vehicle types can also have their plates and they have different fees, check here for the current pricing: DOL Pickleball plate

Can i just go to my local Department of Licensing office?

Local DOL offices can handle the requests for a Standard Pickleball plate. If you are requesting a Personalized plate, you can only mail it to the Application and Issuance Unit in Olympia. The address is on the form.

It took three years working through Washington State Legislature and literally thousands of you signing the petition, and hundreds more pickleball players contacting their representatives.

Now it's here! Pickleball license plate started on November 1st. 2025.

How to Get Your Pickleball Plate

Getting the new Washington Pickleball State Sport license plate is easier than it may seem, but the Department of Licensing (DOL) process can be a little confusing.

The most important thing to know: You need to apply using a paper form. There are no ways to purchase the plate directly online from DOL.

A few things before you start

The Pickleball State Sport plate is available to Washington State vehicle owners. You have two choices:

You receive the pickleball background with next plate sequence 5-digitnumber (e.g. PB12345)

Complete the Department of Licensing (DOL) paper application steps 1 to 3
Mail to your local Department of Licensing (DOL) office with payment

Pickleball background with your choice of 7 characters, no “PB” prefix. (e.g. KITCHEN)

Cost: $214*
Includes new tabs (no extra charge) with the same expiration date as your originals
Confirm that your preferred combination is available and allowed HERE
Complete the paper application form steps 1 through 4
Mail form and payment to the Department of Licensing (DOL) office in Olympia (see exact address on the form)

Terms & Disclosure

Under the terms of the enacting legislation SB5444, SMPA is the sponsoring organization responsible for the management of the Pickleball State Sport License Plate program.

Funds from the Department of Licensing’s sale of Pickleball Specialty Plates will be used solely for construction and maintainance of dedicated pickleball courts across Washington State. More details on fund usage can be found here.

While SMPA is responsible for marketing, communication, and fund management, the organization does not receive any license plate proceeds.
